Strolling in Shropshire

Friday 29 August 2014

Shropshire is not somewhere I've ever visited before. I've passed through on the way to Wales, but never stopped, although it always looked tempting. It's not very far from our house, so it seemed like a good place to head for a little break.

We had a couple of pleasant strolls, in the gentle heather capped hills (Long Mynd and Stiperstones) and enjoyed some good food from little market towns that were full of history, without being either lifeless museums or overrun with tourists. Then I always enjoy exploring castles - and being a border land we saw plenty: Ludlow, Wigmore (actually in Herefordshire), Clun and Montgomery (in Powys, Wales).

We stayed in Bishop's Castle, in the Old Brick B&B. I highly recommend the beer from the Three Tuns Brewery in town, the oldest brewery in the country, which we enjoyed with food at the Three Tuns Inn next door, a proper pub.
