Pen Y Fan in the snow

Friday 16 January 2015

With a little snow this week at our house in Dursley, I was keen to head to the hills and see how much there was up high - and since I wanted to go high, I thought we may as well go all the way to the highest point of the Brecon Beacons, Pen Y Fan. Today we walked the horseshoe clockwise from the Neuadd reservoir, a repeat (albeit in the opposite direction) of the very first walk I did in the Brecon Beacons.

Today there was a fair amount of powdery snow, with a howling wind and cloud that kept coming and going. Great weather for some varied daytime photography. The light changed minute by minute - cold in the snow, with the warmth of the sun bursting through, often lighting the spin drift beautifully. On the top of Pen Y Fan itself, we were in the cloud, although we got a couple of glimpses as it cleared momentarily. It was a glorious way to spend the day and we arrived down at the car pretty late, almost needing torches.
