A month of Bluebells

Monday 11 May 2015

The woods change so fast at this time of year, as the leaves grow and flowers carpet the forest floor. First there are wood anemones, then of course the bluebells, which are particularly fine in Twinberrow Woods, near our house in Dursley. This year the display has been very good, although perhaps slightly later than last year.

I find bluebells hard to photograph - they are so beautiful in the woods, but often so disappointing when pictured. Getting down to their level and not keeping the whole scene in focus is my favourite approach, that captures a more painterly impressionistic image. It's not quite the experience I see in the woods, but I think it makes for a much better image than simply standing up and taking what you see. That said, I've included a variety of styles here, to show how the woods changes over a month.
