Above the Mendips

Friday 12 September 2014

I go caving pretty often, so I've been down many caves underneath the Mendips. I rarely take a camera underground - although I made an exception for Reservoir Hole - partly because taking decent photos takes time and that's not typically what the rest of the group wants to do. Then caves must be one of the worst environments to take camera equipment into: wet, muddy and likely to be bashed about.

This time I wasn't here to go caving, but to go for a walk. I rarely walk on the Mendips, as although it's not that far away, if we're getting in the car we tend to head for the bigger hills of Wales. Today though my sister wanted to scout the route for a running relay race she's doing - Uphill to Wells - in particular the route from Black Rock at the top of Cheddar Gorge, to Priddy. This 7 mile stretch follows the West Mendip Way, which is often not that clearly marked. It was a pretty sticky day and there wasn't much time nor great light for photography. Nonetheless, we enjoyed good views over the Somerset Levels as autumn begins to arrive. Not so enjoyable was the field of over curious cows!
