Northumberland Coast and Castles
Sunday 5 October 2014
Once again we were visiting some friends in Newcastle and having made the long journey up north, we decided to explore some new places too. Last time we walked in the Yorkshire Dales, this trip we decided to visit the Northumberland coastline. I've seen a lot of beautiful photos of the area, as it often features in photography magazines, so it was good to explore it for myself.
Initially the weather wasn't so kind. No hint of a sunset on Friday evening, then plently of rain on Saturday morning, so we visited Banburgh Castle - its magnificent state rooms providing welcome shelter. With brightening weather and the tides low, we crossed the tidal causeway to Holy Island and Lindisfarne castle, for a little wander around this pleasant island. Sunday was brighter still and we enjoyed a seven mile walk along the coast, from Beadnell to Craster, making use of the bus (number X18) to make a linear walk. Right from near the start the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle are visible, becoming ever more imposing. What an impression it must have made at the height of its power. A delightful way to spend the weekend!
