Black Mountains, Llanthony Loop
Sunday 2 October 2016
The Black Mountains around the Vale of Ewyas and Llanthony has been one of my favourite places to walk for several years now. Even though I've visited several times, we still managed to cover a little new ground this time, enjoying warm sunshine that hardly felt autumnal at all. Parking at the the Queen's Head (Stanton), we climbed out up onto the west side of the Vale of Ewyas. The distinctive shape of Sugar loaf was behind us, dominating the Black Mountains more than its modest height might suggest. We dropped down into Llanthony via Cwm Bwchel, pausing at the ruins of the Llanthony Priory. Then climbing back out of the valley, we walked the border of Wales and England along Hatterrall Hill to complete our loop.
I'd love to hear what you think...
