Autumn Colours in Twinberrow Woods, Dursley
Friday 11 November 2016
Changes over the seasons are one of my favourite things and autumn leaves are a highlight of the year for me. I love the woods full of fantastic rich colours, with leaves falling in your face and scrunching under your feet. There's something special and reflective about woodlands and a quiet explore was just what I needed today.
Yet when it comes to photographing woods, I find it hard to capture the beautiful experience I get in person. I spent over two hours wandering and taking photos, while trying a wide variety of approaches. But I find just taking a wide angle photo of the whole woods tends to give a disappointing photo. In reality, the woods feel large and complex whilst surrounding me, so the experience on a small screen or print seems underwhelming. Nonetheless, I do continue to try this approach and include one example here, using the sun to add some interest, both in the backlit trees and with shadows on the carpet of leaves. However typically I prefer to use a longer telephoto lens to capture details, or use light and focus to simplify the woods into layers. So here's my taste of the autumn woods - if it's autumn as you read this, I hope you can go out and find some leaves for yourself.
