Winter camping around Pen Y Fan

Friday 20 January 2023

I'd not been wild camping for over a year, since before my second son was born, so was delighted when time to head for the hills coincided with such fantastic winter conditions.

First light after a wild night, windy and chilly

Pen Y Fan sunrise - many people on the summit, while I was alone on nearby Cribyn

Orange fade to inky blue, another camp out in the snowy hills

A promising start to the next morning

But the cloud swept in, hiding the summits

Warm tones, but it was below freezing

Looking down to the fog covered fields far below

Such a beautiful winter day

The setting sun found a crack in the clouds

Rainbow drama the next morning

But with flatter light in the day, looking from Pen Y Fan over Cribyn to the Black Mountains
